Compaign
Organised by Hansadhwani—a nature, art, and cultural organisation—the campaign titled “From Waste to Wonder, Let Nature Prosper” was launched near the garbage dumpsite along the Maligaon-Goshala-Boragaon road.
Notably, a stretch of road nearly 200 metres long, adjacent to the Goshala wall—serving as a junction connecting Maligaon and Boragaon in the city—had long been known as a public garbage dump. In stark contrast to the breathtaking natural beauty on the other side of the Goshala wall, the foul-smelling, unhygienic, and unpleasant conditions on this side posed a constant threat to public health.
Under the slogan “Let cleanliness be our culture, let protecting nature be our duty,” Hansadhwani kicked off its “From Waste to Wonder” initiative right from this spot.
The area was first cleaned up with the support of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). Following the cleanup, beautiful nature-themed artwork was painted on the walls by popular artist Bhejal. Alongside the wall paintings, the walls were decorated with slogans such as:
By the evening, fresh fertile soil was brought in, and Bougainvillea, Deodar (Mast Tree), and Neem saplings obtained from N.F. Railway were planted, beautifully transforming the entire space.
Incredibly, a location where pedestrians previously had to hold their breath just to pass through was transformed into a popular selfie point for passersby within a single day. By evening, a festive atmosphere had bloomed as people of all ages gathered to spend their time there.
Reflecting on the successful execution of this urban beautification and cleanliness drive, the founding secretary of Hansadhwani, Sangeeta Medhi, expressed that joint cooperation among the government, various environmental organisations across the state, and the general public will make this campaign even more effective in the future. She noted that through the planned and scientific disposal of urban waste, the city’s beautification efforts can yield far greater results, and Hansadhwani will continue its efforts in this direction.
Active members of Hansadhwani, Kapil Sharma and Bornajit Das, were also present during the event.
